Welcome to the University of Mary Washington Then & Now Photography Exhibition!

Our Mission 

Our mission is to create and display a digital exhibit of “then and now” photographs depicting the University of Mary Washington’s Fredericksburg campus dating from the school’s establishment in 1908 through the present time. We also did our best to provide context for each of the photos in an effort to portray the evolution of student life and campus structure.

Note I: We did not include any structures built within the last five years (i.e., Anderson Center, Eagle Landing Apartments) and anything located outside of the perimeter of campus or anything that is not iconic to the campus. We understand we have not included every single structure on the Fredericksburg campus.

Note II: We acknowledge that Shannon Hauser, Simpson Library, is working on a similar project involving the University buildings. We have corresponded with her to ensure our project is distinct but complementary to hers.

Note III: Our site has a responsive WordPress theme so you can view it on desktops, tablets, and smart phones. We encourage all viewers to use either Chrome, Safari, or Firefox as their browsers as they will allow for the best experience of our site.

Acknowledgements

We could not have built this photography exhibition alone, and we had wonderful guidance from several people along the way. We would like to thank Carolyn Parsons in Simpson Library for showing us the UMW Special Collections,  Vice President Rick Pearce for permission to access the campus rooftops, Harold Williams for taking us on the rooftops, Ryan Brazell and Martha Burtis in DTLT for helping us with technical modifications to our site, and custom coding functions for our site, and last but not least, Dr. McClurken for giving us advice, teaching us new digital skills, putting together the History 428: Adventures in Digital course, and creating the Then & Now project idea.
